Busy Big Weekend

Families flocked to the district council’s four leisure centres last weekend when they were put in the hands of pirates – all for free!
The family fun which included pirate themed entertainment in the swimming pools with inflatables, games and party music and free face painting was part of the annual ‘Big Weekend’ which aims to increase the number of people taking regular exercise.
400 people claimed their free swims and overall swim visits were up 30% over the weekend compared to previous months.
The ‘Big Weekend’ in Bedale, Northallerton, Stokesley and Thirsk and Sowerby saw free gym trials, fitness class tasters and guided tours of the facilities take place. There were also big discounts on gym memberships with over 200 people joining one of their local leisure centres.
“There was a real buzz in all of the leisure centres and the feedback from customers over the weekend was fantastic” said Cllr Bridget Fortune, Portfolio holder for Leisure pictured with pirate Henry Stephens, swim teacher at Bedale Leisure Centre.
And Linda Davidson who attended the pirate swim at Stokesley Leisure Centre with her family took to the centres Facebook page to recommend the facility and feedback about their experience: “We loved the pirate themed weekend! My son loved the games and inflatables and the staff were brilliant with the kids. The leisure centre should definitely do it more often.”
