Winter swim gala

Hambleton’s four swimming clubs battled it out last weekend in their winter swimming gala.
Held at Bedale Leisure Centre, over a hundred junior swimmers aged from 6 – 14 years competed in individual and team events – in front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and for the older swimmers – butterfly. By the time of the final events – the two cannon races comprising of six boys and six girls one from each age group, the atmosphere was electrifying.
It was a very tough competition but Northallerton Amateur Swim Club held on to their top spot while Stokesley Swim Club took second place by one point!
The Hambleton Swimming League is a collaborative effort between the clubs in Bedale, Northallerton, Stokesley and Thirsk and Hambleton District Council.
“There is no emphasis on individual winners as we are trying to promote a team effort and minimise individual pressure that youngsters often place on themselves,” said Sam Davison, Chairman, Northallerton, ASC.
“It is great to be able to provide a platform for the younger and less experienced swimmers and on behalf of the four Chairmen I would like to thank all the swimmers, the spectators who make these events come alive and the helpers who from each club give up their time to act as marshals, judges and time keepers.
“Once again it was great to see Councillor Mrs Bridget Fortune who attended the event to hand out the medals. Her involvement is really valued by all the clubs and parents.”
