Community grant pot doubles in size

Mad grants

For the second year running Hambleton District Council is allocating a massive £250,000 to a scheme that offers grants to community projects.

The Making a Difference Fund helps local groups across the district deliver projects they cannot afford to fund themselves.

“Following the success of last year’s programme we are once again running our community grants scheme - and with the same budget allocation, which was doubled last year to help life return to as normal as can be after the pandemic,” said Council Leader, Councillor Mark Robson.

“The amounts we award may be small but the difference to the community can be massive.”

Since its launch in 2015, 262 projects have received help - including a range of community led projects such as improving village halls or play areas, to projects that help reduce loneliness and isolation or increase accessibility to services.

Each of Hambleton’s five sub-areas based around the market towns of Bedale, Easingwold, Northallerton, Stokesley and Thirsk, and their surrounding villages, have £50,000 to share out.

Each application needs to show it will make a genuine difference to people’s lives, demonstrate value for money and meet at least one of the council’s priorities - driving economic vitality, enhancing health and wellbeing, caring for the environment or providing a special place to live.  Applicants can apply for between £2,000 and £24,999, and whilst a project can be awarded the maximum grant allocation, grants tend to be awarded for smaller amounts to a larger number of applicants.

All applications must be supported by the local Ward Councillor, with Cabinet Members giving the final approval for accepted schemes.

Applications opened today (13 October) and must be submitted by 5 December 2021.  A decision on which applications have been successful is expected in March 2022
