The Covid crisis one year on - council continues to drive recovery effort
One year into the Covid crisis, Hambleton District Council (HDC) remains determined to support residents and businesses in recovery.
Over the last year the council has played a hands-on role in ensuring businesses get the vital financial support needed to survive the Covid crisis as well as ensuring residents and visitors could enjoy our market towns whenever possible, as safely as possible.
With an unprecedented number of government grants available at various points during the year, so far HDC has paid out more than £42 million in grants to businesses (81% of the grant funding available) across the district with financial support set to continue through until the summer. This vital funding has been key in helping our businesses keep going and bounce back from the crisis.
In the coming weeks, as we move along the government’s roadmap to normality, HDC will also be continuing to make sure our market towns are as safe as possible as we welcome people back. New signage reminding people of social distancing and the steps they can take to protect themselves will be in place with business packs of posters and social media graphics for businesses to download and use available on our website.
Businesses who would like to serve food and drinks outside can also apply to the council for a pavement licence if they are eligible, or for planning advice to help make the most of any appropriate outdoor space next to their premises and encourage trade.
Our Civic Centre in Northallerton is also aiming to open its doors to customers again on 12 April if it’s safe to do so.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Mark Robson said: “The last twelve months have been the most challenging in a generation, with Covid continuing to impact on everyone’s lives.
“This week, one year on, I want to reassure residents and businesses across Hambleton that we will continue to deliver the high quality council services residents have rightly come to expect and rely upon as well as supporting our businesses and market towns in bouncing back.
“It is my sincere hope that there are brighter days ahead but until we are safely out the other side, we will do all we can as a council to continue to support our residents and drive our district’s recovery through the coming months.”
