Proposals to look at a Hambleton based crematorium were unveiled by district council leaders today (Tuesday 16 July).
Leader of the council, Councillor Mark Robson, said that approval for the scheme will be sought from members in September.
Work on the project has been underway for the last 12 months with a specialist consultant looking at the need, business case and for possible sites.
“This work has been undertaken in strictest confident because of the commercial sensitivity of the scheme,” he told members of full council.
“We believe there is a need for this resource in Hambleton with Darlington, Teesside and York currently being the closest facilities. This proposal will be benefit our residents with the site we are considering based on catchment area and accessibility.
“This is a very interesting move for the authority – it is not something we have dealt with before but this is a service that is definitely needed for Hambleton.”
He said Cabinet will consider a business case and site at their meeting in September.
