A private hire vehicle cannot ply for hire or stand on a rank. Unlike hackney carriages all private hire vehicles must be pre-booked with a private hire operator.

How much will it cost to apply?

New application £340

(Minimum £50 to be paid on initial application. The remainder of the fee must be paid prior to the grant of the licence)

How do I apply?

Transfer application (no charge) - Part 1 - existing licence holder and Part 2 - new proprietor

Applicants must also produce:

  • the vehicle registration document (V5C) in the name of the proprietor/part-proprietor (or proof of ownership – i.e. a bill of sale from a reputable firm);
  • a current vehicle insurance certificate or cover note which includes the carriage of passengers for private hire;
  • a completed vehicle inspection form issued by a Hambleton-based VOSA accredited testing station.
