Odour pollution

Odour problems come in many forms, these could be day to day smells for example cooking at commercial premises and agricultural activities, or one off instances of petrol odours, gas, solvents etc which may require immediate attention.

If you are experiencing problems regarding gas or petrol these need to be reported immediately.

Gas odours or any suspected gas leak must be reported immediately to National Grid on 0800 111 999. Their advice is:-

  • turn off the gas supply at the mains
  • open doors and windows
  • do not switch anything electrical on or off, including the lights
  • do not smoke, strike matches or light candles

If you can smell petrol or suspect a petrol leak locally or suspect someone has pored petrol into a drain, contact the Fire and Rescue Service on 999.

For many people, odours affecting the use of their properties is a source of irritation and stress that can interfere with the use of an individuals home.

Frequently, problems regarding odour can be resolved informally by politely explaining the problem to the maker and trying to come to a compromise. However, this informal approach may not always be successful.
