Tattoo hygiene rating scheme

Tattoo hygiene rating scheme

Similar to the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, the Tattoo Hygiene Rating Scheme aims to raise the hygiene standards of tattoo studios and to improve public awareness of the risks associated with unhygienic tattoo practices and premises. Participation in the scheme is voluntary and open to all tattoo studios in the Hambleton District Council area in relation to their tattooing operations only. In North Yorkshire the scheme is also being run by Harrogate District Council.

What are the benefits of using a tattoo studio which is a member of the Tattoo Hygiene Rating Scheme?

  • A tattoo hygiene rating makes it easier for customers to choose studios with good hygiene standards and helps studios demonstrate their commitment to high hygiene standards
  • Studios are encouraged to meet best practice thereby ensuring that they are doing everything reasonably practicable to safeguard their clients from blood-borne infections such as Hepatitis and HIV/AIDS.

How does it work?

Following a programmed inspection from the Council participating studios are awarded a rating from one (needs improving) to four (very good) based on criteria such as the cleanliness of the premises, personal hygiene, staff development, level of aftercare advice and record keeping. The rating can be displayed in the premises in certificate form and on the window with a window sticker.

A list of participating studios and their ratings can be found here.

Tattoo scratchers

It is a legal requirement for tattooists to be registered with the Local Authority. Any tattooists who are not registered, known as ‘Scratchers’ are more likely to operate unhygienically and put their clients at risk. If you are aware of anyone performing tattooing, who is not registered please contact the Council as they are committing an offence.

This form can be used to report ‘Scratchers’.

A list of registered tattooists can be found here.

Over 18s only

It is illegal for under 18’s to get a tattoo. If you are aware or suspect anyone of practising in underage tattooing please contact the police on 101.
