Frequently asked questions

Subscriptions for the 2021/22 garden waste collection service are now available. Subscriptions are valid from Monday 29 March 2021 to Friday 25 March 2022.

Once subscribed you will receive a sticker licence by post to attach to your green wheeled bin. A letter will provide the terms and conditions of the service and give instructions on attaching the licence.

It is the responsibility of the resident to ensure their garden waste licences are correctly displayed and secured to the bin. Failure will result in non-collection.

Licences are not transferable, non-refundable and are only valid for the property for which they were purchased.

Why were charges for garden waste introduced?

Collecting garden waste is not a statutory service. Under the Controlled Waste Regulations 2012 if a council chooses to offer the service it can make a charge to residents to cover the costs of running it.

When will I receive my licence?

Licences are sent closer to the time of the service commencement so that they are not lost or misplaced. Early subscribers will have their licences by 1 March. After this time licences will arrive within 10 working days of purchase. If it is not received please contact us.

Residents who have signed up to a self-account and provided an email address will be notified when their licence is dispatched.

It is the residents responsibility to ensure their garden waste licence is correctly displayed and secured to the bin. Failure will result in non collection.

What if my licence is missing or stolen?

A replacement licence is needed before the next collection. Bins that do not display licences will not be collected.

Why do collections stop over winter?

Low amounts of garden waste are collected during winter months. Inclement weather can freeze garden waste making collections impractical. The council can concentrate on extra recycling, litter picking, training and other duties during these suspended collections.

What happens if my bin is too heavy?

Bins considered too heavy by collection crews will not be emptied due to health and safety risks. Contents must be removed before the next collection. Heavy bins can prove difficult to move across varied surfaces including gravel, soil, curbs, steps and inclines.

What happens if I don’t want to subscribe to the service?

Residents who do not wish to subscribe will have to dispose of their own garden waste. It is not acceptable for garden waste to be placed in black bins.

Are there any exemptions or concessions?

There are no exemptions or concessions. Schools, churches, village and parish halls and properties with charitable status have the same entitlement as residential properties and are able to join the scheme.

Can I get an assisted collection?

Assisted collections can be arranged. If you are already in receipt of an assisted collection for household waste this will be applied to garden waste collections providing a licence is displayed.

Will my Christmas tree be collected?

Christmas trees will be collected from subscribers to the garden waste scheme. Trees must be chopped up and placed in the bin with the lid closed. Normal garden waste is accepted during this collection.

Christmas trees will not be collected from non-subscribing households.

Can I have more than one bin?

Generally there is no limit to the number of bins providing there is enough space for the bins to be collected. A licence must be displayed on each bin. A site visit may be required for properties requesting three or more bins. It may be necessary to take bins to a designated collection point to ensure they do not cause an obstruction. Additional bins will be provided, you will be asked if you require bins during the subscription process.

Are there different size bins available?

The standard 240 litre bin is the only bin size.

How do collectors know I have subscribed to the service?

Each bin must display a valid licence visible to collection crews. No licence will result in no collection.

What time should my bin be out for collection?

All bins should be available by 6am on collection day as times may vary. Bins should not be put out any earlier than the evening before.

Where should I place my garden waste bin for collection?

It should be placed in the same location as refuse and recycling, usually the area in front of the property, unless otherwise advised.

Misuse of the garden waste scheme will result in removal from the service. There will be no refund and the green bin will be removed from the property.
