Food safety inspections

We carry out regular checks on all food premises to ensure the public are protected and that high standards are maintained. Inspections take place without prior warning and higher risk premises are visited more frequently than lower risk premises.

During the inspection officers will want to be satisfied that adequate controls are in place to prevent any problems, ensure staff are adequately trained and the condition and cleanliness of the premises meets required standards.

Scores are awarded for food hygiene compliance, structural compliance and confidence in management, premises are not rated against the quality of the food they produce.

Low risk food businesses

If you are a low risk food business (such as chemists, newsagent or village hall), you can complete a questionnaire to remove the need for a physical inspection by a food officer:

Getting ready to reopen your food business?

Reopening your food business following a period of closure during COVID-19 will require some extra checks, in addition to your usual opening checks.

The Food Standards Agency have produced the following checklist to inform you of the necessary extra checks you must carry out.

COVID-19 Risk Assessment

COVID-19 is a new risk that must be incorporated into workplace risk assessments. Employers must therefore carry out a COVID-19 risk assessment if they have not already done so. This will enable employers to mitigate and manage the potential risks posed by COVID-19 for their employees and their businesses. Employers with more than 5 employees must document their assessment.
