The High Streets Heritage Action Zones Programme is a nationwide initiative designed to secure lasting improvements to our historic high streets for the communities who use them. It is funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and administered by Historic England. The Programme has as its goal making the high street a more attractive, engaging and vibrant place for people to live, work and spend time.

High Street Heritage Action Zone in Northallerton

Over the next three and a half years Hambleton District Council, in conjunction with a wide range of stakeholders, will deliver an exciting array of projects to revitalise Northallerton High Street. We plan to create a vibrant and thriving place for people to dwell, shop and spend their leisure time; whilst retaining the charm and heritage of a North Yorkshire market town.

What will happen as part of the High Streets Heritage Action Zones Programme?

  • Creation of a grant funding scheme landlords and property owners can access to assist in shopfront improvements to their properties.
  • A feasibility study will be carried out looking into the use of under-utilised space above buildings in the high street. This work will provide the foundations for delivery of an affordable homes project providing much needed accommodation for young people. (Further external funding has now been secured via Future High Streets Fund to deliver the physical conversion elements of the project)
  • Creation of an augmented reality Heritage Trail through the High Street and surrounding area (including the Treadmills, former Northallerton Prison site). The trail will provide an interesting and informative journey through the history of Northallerton.

How will the community be involved?

As part of the High Street Heritage Action Zone programme, a Cultural Programme of nationally and locally commissioned activities that celebrate the local identity of each high street will also take place. The local cultural programme will be delivered by a consortium made up of cultural and community organisation reflective of Northallerton and the people within it.

The Northallerton cultural programme will be a celebration of the towns people and cultural heritage, bringing the towns stories to life through a series of events.

If you or your local organisation would like to find out about how you can get involved with the cultural consortium please contact:
