How the council works

Hambleton District Council is a local government authority in North Yorkshire. Services in the district are divided between us, North Yorkshire County Council, and Town and Parish councils.

Hambleton District Council is made up of Councillors elected by the public in local elections. They work with local people and organisations to decide local priorities, and these decisions are implemented by permanent council staff and officers who deliver these services on a daily basis. More information about Councillors is here:

These services are funded from a variety of sources, including Government grants, council tax, business rates and service fees.

How we pay for services

Our largest source of income is from collecting council tax and business rates. Even though we're the authority that sends out the bills, we only keep about 6% of your council tax. The rest goes to other authorities:

  • North Yorkshire County Council
  • North Yorkshire County Council Adult Social Care
  • North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority
  • Police and Crime Commissioner North Yorkshire
  • Parish and Town Councils
