Universal Credit

Universal Credit is a benefit scheme that replaced six existing benefits with a single monthly payment.

 To be eligible for Universal Credit you must:

  • have no dependent children or be paying maintenance via the Child Support Agency
  • be a British citizen and aged between 18 years and 60 years and six months
  • be fit for work and not be in receipt of Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Allowance or Carers' Allowance
  • not be pregnant, nor have given birth within the last 15 weeks
  • not be receiving Jobseekers' Allowance, Income Support, Employment and Support Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disability Allowance nor awaiting decision for one or more of these benefits, nor appealing against a decision not to award one of these
  • not have savings in excess of £6,000
  • not have any caring responsibilities
  • not be self-employed, a company director, in education, nor have a person acting on your behalf over your claim.
  • have a valid bank, building society or Post Office account and National Insurance number
  • earn less than £330 a month as a single person or if part of a couple earn less than £330 per month if one person is working or £525 per month if both are working
  • not own your own home, be homeless or live in supported accommodation

Northallerton Jobcentre does not cover all the households within the council boundaries. If you live in the following areas and meet the above criteria you can apply for Universal Credit:

You can claim Universal Credit online on Gov.uk:

Important: your session will time out and you will have to start again if you are inactive for more than 20 minutes.

Make sure you have the following information before you start:

  • your postcode
  • your National Insurance Number
  • details of the bank, building society or Post Office account you want Universal Credit paid into
  • your rent agreement (if you have one)
  • details of your savings or other capital
  • details of any income that's not from work (e.g. from an insurance plan)
  • details of any other benefits you're getting

You will also need these details for people who live in your home, eg your partner.

It should take around 20 to 40 minutes to complete your claim.

Universal Credit is paid by a single monthly payment in arrears. This places an emphasis on the claimant to manage their money effectively.

In exceptional circumstances alternative payment arrangements can be made. This will be discussed when you make your claim but it is conditional on you engaging with the personal budgeting support service.
