""Road safety - cycling and walking to school

This service is not delivered by Hambleton District Council - it is delivered by North Yorkshire County Council.

Walking and cycling to school is very much encouraged from a health, environment and social perscpective.

North Yorkshire County Council Opens in a new window can help schools increased the number of children who walk and cycle to school through a combination of classroom work linked to the national curriculum, assistance for schools writing their own school travel plan and examination of possible construction projects to create 'safer routes to school'.

North Yorkshire County Council can deliver a Cycle Awareness Programme (CAP) for children in years five and six of Primary School. The aim of the course is to provide a starting point for lifelong development and consolidation of skills necessary for good cycling practice. It should not be seen as a one-off training course, complete in itself. The training is usually provided by a volunteer recruited by the School. They receive training, support and materials from their local Road Safety Officer (RSO). Each course lasts around 10 hours, delivered over a number of weeks. This can be in school time or as an after school activity, this is usually agreed between the school and the instructor.
