Listed Buildings

Hambleton has a rich and varied historic heritage. The Council recognises that this is a priceless asset which must be cherished.

The list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest records the best of our heritage. Buildings which are on the list are given special protection for the future. There are just over 2,000 listed buildings in Hambleton ranging from large country houses to small cottages.

The list also includes many smaller structures such as old style telephone boxes and features such as gates and garden walls. Buildings hitherto overlooked, but of special architectural or historic interest, may be periodically added to the list.

Listed buildings are graded according to their age, architectural quality and historic interest, from those of outstanding interest (Grade I) to buildings of special interest which warrant preservation (Grade II). Particularly important Grade II buildings are classified as grade II*.

In Hambleton:

The listing covers the whole building, the interior as well as the exterior. There is no such thing as a listed facade or interior. Also any architectural feature fixed to a listed building, or pre 1948 feature within the grounds of a listed building, is included in the listing.

Protecting listed buildings is of the utmost importance because they are part of our national heritage and a national asset. The Council has extra powers to protect such buildings while owners have a special responsibility to look after them.
