Beacon Learning Exchanges

"Putting Planning at the Heart of the Community"

Hambleton District Council and the other local authorities awarded Beacon status in 2007-2008 for 'Promoting Sustainable Communities through the Planning Process' jointly hosted two Learning Exchange events in York and in London. These events were supported by the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA), the theme sponsor World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Planning and Advisory Service (PAS) and the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG).

Each of the four Beacon Authorities identified an area of specialism and lead workshops based on those themes:

  • Ashford Borough Council: Embracing growth
  • Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council: Working with LSPs - the benefits
  • Hambleton District Council: Delivering community aspirations within the LDF
  • Woking Borough Council: Tackling climate change at the local level

The programme also included keynote speakers from CLG and PAS, exhibitions and open question and answer sessions.

Attendance at each event was restricted to encourage participation and interaction throughout the programme. In total 99 authorities and organisations were represented with 163 delegates attending; this included senior officers, elected members and LSP members.

All presentations are available to view or download on the IDeA website at: www.idea.gov.uk/planninglearningexchanges Opens in a new window

A summary report of the issues and key messages which emerged during the programmes will also be posted on this website.
