Beacon Authority

Hambleton District Council has taken one of four Beacon Awards in the Round 8 challenge 'promoting sustainable communities through the planning process'.

The bid was lead by Director of Planning and Environmental Services Steve Quartermain , who attributes Hambleton's success to
'our unique selling point - the integration of our LDF with other key strategies and programmes, particularly the Community Strategy, to deliver a vision of a sustainable future for Hambleton based on an analysis of our District and what makes it tick - and a view of the kind of place it should become".

The Beacon bid demonstrates Hambleton's commitment to best practice working through

  • Positively embracing the new planning system; recognising the potential of spatial planning to deliver corporate and community priorities
  • Integrating the LDF across the Council, both working arrangements and linkages with other strategies and programmes; particularly achieving a 'joined-up' approach with the Community Plan
  • Maximising the potential of partnerships to delver improvements to social, environmental and economic well being and integrating with partners strategies, initiatives and programmes
  • Supporting and encouraging a network of democratic and other community groups to engage in decisions that affect them to acquire the skills to be effective partners
  • Creating the right conditions internally to underpin success; leadership, corporate commitment, realistic resourcing, collaborative working and organisational structure

A positive approach to development, linked to proactive work with partners has taken forward the strategic thinking that emerged from Hambleton's Community Plan and LDF public consultation programme. Schemes for more sustainable towns and villages across the district are now in place, from specific development proposals in small villages to major regeneration initiatives in the market towns, working with public and private sector partners at regional, district and local levels.

As part of its Beacon Year Hambleton will be hosting a range of knowledge sharing events
