Healthy living
These days, 'modern life' can mean that we're a lot less active. With so many opportunities to watch TV or play computer games, and with so much convenience and fast food available, we don't move about as much, or eat as well as we used to. This can cause life-threatening diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease - so it's really important that we do something about it.
The Council offers a range of services and facilities to help you eat well and become more active - these include access to high quality Leisure Centres in Bedale, Northallerton, Stokesley and Thirsk - each has a swimming pool, Zest Health and Fitness Gym and floodlit pitches for hire. The centres also have specialised programmes such as Weight and See and Exercise Referral. For residents of Easingwold the Galtres Centre Opens in a new window offers a comprehensive range of services to get you more active.
Local people have turned into 'poster' stars as part of a new campaign to encourage everyone to 'get active'. It aims to get people of all ages to take at least three 30 minute sessions of exercise a week - as part of their every day lifestyle. Posters asking 'how do you get your 3 x 30 minutes' are going up around the district.
Backed by the North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust (PCT), the campaign will also see new opportunities provided particularly for the over 50s. Parish Councils, local sports clubs, leisure centres and employers will be encouraged to do more to help residents take up active lifestyles.
The Council will shortly be running a Health Weight Programme for children aged 7 -13 years old living in the Thirsk area. If you are worried that your child(ren) might be unhealthy or even overweight please contact our Active 4 Life Officer or visit the MEND Opens in a new window (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do-it) website for further information.
For those interested in taking up cycling the Council runs a Cycle 4 Health Opens in a new window scheme - the next one is due to begin in Northallerton after Easter 2010.
