Village Halls

The Purpose of the Scheme

The scheme seeks to assist with preserving, improving and, where necessary, extending existing Village Hall facilities in addition to providing new facilities.

Church Owned Community Halls

Applications relating to Church Owned Community Halls can now be considered for grant aid, under the Village Halls Grants Scheme where it can be clearly demonstrated that the hall is necessary to support existing demand for community activity and such demand cannot be met by similar expenditure on an existing Village Hall.
Applicants are also required to show that:

In addition to the above, the existing Village Hall Scheme conditions as outlined on the leaflet are applicable.

Eligible Projects

  • Erection of a new building
  • Acquisition of land and building(s)
  • Capital improvements (eg. re-roofing, etc)
  • Professional fees (legal, architectural and planning)
  • Fire Precaution work necessary to achieve a Public Entertainment Licence
  • Improve the building to comply with parliamentary legislation

Ineligible Projects

  • Interior and exterior decorations
  • Interior furnishings including carpets and curtains
  • General repairs and maintenance including pointing brickwork

Grant Available

Applications will normally be considered for the following level of grant:


Note: Retrospective applications will not be considered, however, in exceptional circumstances prior permission may be given to incur expenditure without prejudice to the result of the application.

Timing of Application

Applications for grants received by Leisure Services are assessed and submitted for final consideration to the Spokesperson for Health. Applications are considered throughout the year.

How to Apply

As most Village/Church Hall Projects require funding from a number of agencies, potential applicants are advised to contact the Leisure Services Section at an early stage for advice on how to proceed. The Leisure Services staff have experience of working with other funding partners and may be able to offer additional information and advice that will be of use in project planning.
