Coach Education and Development
Pre Level 1 Coach Education Programme - North Yorkshire
TAG Rugby: A 3 hour course designed for those teacher / coaches who want to introduce TAG Rugby. The course involves both practical and theory elements and candidates will cover the following areas: - safety checkpoints for practical activities, organising space & players, warm up & cool down, coaching methodology, basic coaching concepts via playground games, use of games, coaching the core skills and how to referee TAG rugby.
Resources: Each coach will receive a coaching DVD and file with over 50 pages of practical ideas and information.
Start Rugby: For: Parents / New Coaches / Teachers of contact rugby
The Start Rugby Coaching course is designed to help you begin your rugby coaching and give others the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of the sport. Start Rugby is a 2 ½ to 3 hour practically-based course and will help you move on to the Level 1Coaching qualification that will further develop your coaching skills and knowledge. By attending a Start Rugby course, you will learn how to deliver elements of the warm-up, handling and contact skills, small sided games and basic coaching processes.
Resources: The course is accompanied by a pack of laminated coaching cards that easily fit into a coach's pocket. Contact your RDO to run a course at your club or school
Tackle Safety / Confidence in Contact: A 3 hour course designed for coaches / teachers / parents and players who wish to develop a greater knowledge of the safe coaching and execution of contact skills in the tackle, the ruck and the maul and the safe individual body positions for players involved in the scrum
Resources: Each candidate will receive a DVD and booklet with over 50 pages of information on safe coaching of contact and coaching ideas.
RFU Community Leaders Award: A 5 hour course designed for young volunteers who wish to be involved in community rugby activity and or develop coaching skills that will enable them to access the RFU Award Course Structure. The course involves both practical and theory elements and candidates will cover the following areas:- communication and presentation skills, plan a Tag coaching session, use appropriate networks to develop an initiative, deliver safe and enjoyable Tag coaching activities, referee a Tag game, and community delivery
Resources: Each candidate will receive a coaching file with over 100 pages of ideas and support literature

Post Level 1 Coach Education Programme - North Yorkshire
Building the Scrum: A 2 hour course designed for teachers, coaches and players who wish to develop a greater understanding of the skills involved in coaching and playing in a 3, 5 and 8 man scrum. Course covers individual and unit skills including; binding, feet and body position, safe techniques and examples of practices to develop these skills. The course may involve some practical so please bring your boots and trainers!!
Advanced Teachers Course: A 2 hour course designed for teacher aims to support those teachers to be able to coach rugby, in particularly those running teams. The course places an emphasis on building upon the teacher/coach's knowledge & delivery skills to build understanding in players of the games through game related coaching & questioning style of coaching. The course covers handling, running, decision making and contact skills.
Principles of Attack: A 2 hour course designed for teachers, coaches and players who wish to develop a greater understanding of the principles of the modern attacking game. Course covers both individual and unit skills required to play the attacking game and practical examples of practices to develop these skills will be provided. You may be asked to join in with practical elements of the course so please bring your boots!!
Continuity and Breakdown Skills: A 2 hour course designed for teachers, coaches and players who wish to develop a greater understanding of continuity and breakdown skills. Course covers both individual and unit skills required to keep the ball alive and practical examples of practices to develop these skills will be provided. You may be asked to join in with practical elements of the course so please bring your boots!!
Coaching Process Skills: A 2 hour course designed for teachers, coaches and players who wish to develop their knowledge of the coaching process. Course covers a theoretical and practical session focussing on the How to coach skills of Instruct and explain, demonstration, observe and analyse and providing feedback.
Games for Understanding: A 2 hour course designed for teachers, coaches and players who wish to develop their game sense approach to coaching. Course covers using games to develop skills and the whole part whole coaching method, this session will provide numerous examples of games and ideas in which to challenge your players. You may be asked to join in with practical elements of the course so please bring your boots!!
Principles of Defence: A 2 hour course designed for teachers, coaches and players who wish to develop a greater understanding of the principles of defence in the modern game. Course covers both individual and unit skills required in defence and practical examples of practices to develop these skills will be provided. Examples of different styles of defence will also be discussed and demonstrated. You may be asked to join in with practical elements of the course so please bring your boots!!
Coaching the Lineout: A 2 hour course designed for teachers, coaches and players who wish to develop a greater understanding of the skills involved in coaching and playing in the lineout. Course covers individual and unit skills including; throwing, jumping, catching, and supporting the jumper; demonstrations of safe techniques and examples of practices to develop skills will be shown. The course will involve some practical coaching so please bring boots and trainers. The course will be especially relevant for those coaches and players who are moving from U15 to U16 when lifting / supporting becomes legal.

RFU Level 1 and Level 2 Award Courses
RFU Level 1 Award Course: - The Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Rugby Union is designed to provide new coaches with the skills and knowledge to deliver rugby and to support other coaches within a coaching team. The course covers a wide range of topics including generic coaching skills, rugby specific coaching skills, sports science, laws of the game and child protection.
Eligibility: Minimum age 16. It is recommended that coaches have a two year playing or coaching background, or have worked in coaching for one season since attending a Tag or Mini / Midi course.
Course Duration: 21 hours course. Carried out over 2 days and a pre course evening session with some home study
Course Costs: £88:13
RFU Level 2 Award Course: - The Level 2 Coaching Certificate in Rugby Union provides teachers & coaches with the skills and knowledge to prepare for, deliver and review coaching / teaching sessions. These may take place within a school, college or club. The Award sits within the United Kingdom Coaching Certificate framework and aims to equip coaches to 'to prepare for, deliver and review a series of coaching sessions.' The course is delivered over 4 days (2 day block and 2 x 1 day sessions, with home study)
Eligibility: Coaches with a Level 1 Award, Teachers with 4/5+ years experience, professional / experienced players with previous coaching experience
Course Duration: 69 hours (4 days on-course study & off-course study)
Course Costs: £176:25
