-Empty residential properties

Open and derelict properties can be an eyesore and also can be dangerous. Where a building is not secured against unauthorized entry or likely to become a danger the Council can require the owner to board secure it or they can carry out the works themselves. The Council can recover the cost of the works from the owner. A property does not have to be derelict for the council to take action and even furnished properties that have been left empty but are not secure against unauthorised access can be dealt with in this way.

Where properties have been left empty for a long time the Council can also take steps to compulsory purchase the property. We would much prefer that properties were brought back into use to provide accommodation and we work with a number of Housing Associations who may be able to help you do this.
