-Housing - information and advice

Hambleton District Council transferred its housing stock to Broadacres Housing Association Opens in a new window in 1993 but it still aims to ensure that an adequate supply of suitable affordable housing accommodation is available to meet local needs through Broadacres and other local housing associations.

Its district-wide housing needs survey is used to help plan housing development with the need for affordable housing in rural parishes under consideration. Parish Councils can request local housing needs surveys - a rolling programme of rural surveys is completed each year.

The Council also encourages owners to bring empty properties back into use. If you are the owner of an empty property and want to know more about available options, please contact us on 0845 1211 555. And if you know of an empty property in the district let us know. It also offers advice and help to homeless people and those threatened with homelessness and eviction and can assist with grants for home improvements, disability adaptations and home energy conservation.

There are a number of grants available, all of which are means tested if you are eligible, you may have to contribute to the cost of the work.

The main grants are:

  • Property Enhancement Grant - aimed at people on benefit and generally for small projects
  • Disabled Facilities Grant - help if you or a member of your family are disabled and need your home adapting to make it easier to move around or use the bathroom facilities. Initially advice is taken from an occupational therapist who will look at your 'enforcement of housing standards requirements'. If you wish to find out more about the types of grants available contact Vale and Dale Home Repair Agency on 01609 778655.

The council also checks to ensure that the law to make sure that all rented houses are fit for living is adhered to - it requires owners to maintain properties in a decent condition. If you are a tenant in a property that is badly maintained or damp and the landlord is not taking steps to sort the problem out contact Environmental Health.
