Homelessness prevention
Hambleton District Council does not have any housing stock as it was transferred to Broadacres Housing Association in 1993 and whilst it still aims to ensure that an adequate supply of suitable affordable housing accommodation is available to meet the needs of local people through Broadacres and other local housing associations, there is a very high demand on all types of housing in the district.
The Council therefore tries to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place and help you stay in your existing home but if this is not possible we will try to assist you in securing decent, affordable housing solutions without the use of emergency accommodation.
Many households live in property secured through the private housing sector such as individual home ownership or renting a property through an estate agency or other private landlord. There is not enough accommodation in the social sector to meet the current housing demands.
The Council has a number of homelessness prevention tools which may be able to assist you to remain in your home. These include
For Tenants
- Tenant and Landlord Mediation
- Advice regarding Housing Benefit and other benefits
- Stopping illegal evictions and harassment
- Assistance with court papers and appearances
- Help with rent arrears
- Debt and Money advice
- Advice regarding repairs and maintenance of property
- Floating support - request a support worker to assist you in securing accommodation and conducting your tenancy, setting up utilities and paying bills.
If you are served with a notice to end your tenancy by your landlord please talk to us.
For Home Owners
- Mortgage Rescue Scheme
- Help with Mortgage Arrears
- Stopping illegal evictions and harassment
- Assistance with court papers and appearances
- Advice regarding Mortgage Relief Benefit and other benefits
- Debt and Money advice
- Floating support - request a support worker to assist you in budgeting, securing employment, education or training.
If you are not able to continue to reside long term where you are currently living eg with other people / with family in overcrowded conditions or the property is not affordable or if you are currently homeless we can help.
If it is not possible to prevent you becoming homeless or threatened with homelessness within 28 days, you can make a homeless application to the Council, who will investigate your case and decide whether you are eligible and homeless and in priority need and whether you are intentionally homeless. In this case you may be offered temporary accommodation.
