Young carers - support and advice
North Yorkshire County Council's Social Care Services Opens in a new window provides advice and support for people who care for relatives, neighbours, or friends who have problems relating to ageing, illness or disability. Carers may be entitled to receive additional help and support for their own needs too.
In North Yorkshire there are many organisations which support carers. Social care services and the four carers centres will offer advice and information as well as other services. Your local customer service centre or carers centre can provide you with more detailed local information.
Young carers are children who care for a parent, grandparent or sibling who has a disability or experiences mental health, drug or alcohol issues. It is currently estimated that one in 12 secondary school children are young carers.
Young carers face serious caring responsibilities. As well as the daily tasks completed for their parents such as housework, cooking and bathing, Young carers live with the added pressure of school and, often, a lack of understanding from school friends. The physical and emotional strain is sometimes too much - many skip school and suffer depression.
