Why Recycle?
Saves Resources
About 75% of the worlds resources are used by 25% of the population. Demand for natural resources increases as the Third World industrializes. The increase in world population, (1850 1.2 billion, 1950 2.5 billion, 1990 5.5 billion, 2050 ?) means less resources to go round. Metals and fossil fuels are finite resources. Responsible forestry management is necessary to preserve the quantity and diversity of trees.
Landfill Sites
About 20 million tonnes of household waste are generated in the UK each year. Around 85% ends up in holes in the ground, (Landfill Sites). Problems with methane gas, toxic wastes leaching into ground water and availability of space are becoming serious problems.
Saves Energy
| Glass: | For each tonne of glass produced, using recycled materials, there is a saving of 30 gallons of oil. |
| Aluminium: | There is a staggering 95% energy saving by using recycled Aluminium instead of raw materials. |
| Paper: | By using waste paper these savings could be made - water use lowered by up to 58%; energy use by 40%; air pollution by 74%; water pollution by 35%. |
