-Recycling - information and advice

The country produces around 20 million tonnes of waste a year - 85% of which has traditionally been sent to landfill sites. But these sites are overfull and the availability of holes in the ground in which to dump rubbish is drying up.

All councils have been set ambitious targets by the government to increase the amount of rubbish recycled - in Hambleton last year (2009/10) we recycled or composted 45.6% of our rubbish and by 2020 that must be at 50%. We are achieving this through fortnightly collections of compostable waste and fortnightly collections of paper, cans, plastic bottles & glass. Aswell as the 131 recycling centres established across the district.

The District Council provides12 large town centre sites and 112 mini village centres. North Yorkshire County Council also places recycling banks in its household waste recycling centres (tips).

The town centre sites are mostly to be found in the car parks or supermarkets - the large modular banks take glass, paper cans, plastics, textiles & books. They are cleaned by the Council but emptied on behalf of the authority by private contractors & charities for re-use and recycling.

Mini Recycling Centres are sited in over 100 villages - at village halls, schools, pubs and in playing fields - collecting glass, paper, card and cans. The banks are emptied by the council's purpose built recycling vehicle and the materials are sold on for recycling.
