Household waste - special collections for large items

The Council will remove certain items of bulky household waste including household furniture and carpets etc by special arrangement. A separate charge is payable for this service. Certain types of waste are excluded from this service including building and demolition waste and the removal of oil tanks.

Please note that we can't give exact prices on this particular page as various factors have to be taken into consideration.- eg: residential or commercial, the location, and type of items. Therefore this often requires the Visiting Officer confirming the fee after he has viewed what has to be collected

Alternatively, the Richmond and Hambleton Furniture Store is a registered charity that will collect good quality furniture free of charge. The aim of the charity is to recycle and provide low cost furniture. They resell any donated furniture at low cost to people on low incomes. They can accept all types of furniture and large electrical items (not cookers or washing machines). If you want to donate beds / sofas / or soft furnishing items then they must also meet the relevant safety standards for foam filled furniture. Whilst we appreciate the generosity of people wishing to donate we are only able to accept furniture in good condition that would be able to be resold.

To arrange for a free collection please call 07801 591581 (when the store is closed you will be automatically transferred to Broadacres Housing Association who take the calls on our behalf)

The worldwide Freecycle Network is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns.

Freecycle groups match people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them. The goal is to keep usable items out of landfills. By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process.

We have a Freecycle group in the Thirsk and Northallerton area. For more information visit groups.yahoo.com/group/freecyclethirsknorthallerton Opens in a new window
