Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs)
What is a Supplementary Planning Document?
Supplementary Planning Documents are used to provide further detail and information in respect of policies and proposals contained in a Development Plan Document. Unlike the Development Plan Documents, an SPD is not part of the statutory Development Plan. This is illustrated in the diagram below. SPDs do, however, form part of the Local Development Framework, and will be an important consideration in determining planning applications.

SPD's may cover a range of issues and can be thematic or site specific. For example, an SPD can be a design guide, development brief or a topic or issue based document.
SPD's must also be consistent with national and regional planning policies as well as the Development Plan Documents in the Local Development Framework (LDF).
The following SPDs have been formally adopted by the Council, following public consultation, and are material considerations that can be taken into account when determining a planning application
- Affordable Housing SPD (Adopted 24 June 2008)
- Sustainable Development SPD (Adopted 22 Sept 2009)
- Domestic Extensions SPD (Adopted 22 Dec 2009)
The following SPDs are still in draft form and are at different stages of production.
The following SPDs will be produced in the near future as outlined in the Council's Local Development Scheme.
- Public Open Space SPD
- Infrastructure Provision & Delivery SPD
For details of other SPDs to be prepared see the Local Development Scheme and the monthly LDF Update Opens in a new window.
