Local Development Framework

In September 2004 the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act brought in major changes to development plan preparation. The old system of Structure Plans, Local Plans and Supplementary Planning Guidance has now been replaced by the Local Development Framework (LDF).

Under the new system the Council has prepared a three year project plan for the LDF, known as a Local Development Scheme.
The Local Development Framework comprises the following parts:

  • Local Development Scheme (LDS). This document sets out the overall timetable for the production of the LDF.
  • Statement of Community Involvement (SCI). This document sets out how the Council will involve the community during the production of the LDF.
  • Local Development Documents. In addition to the LDS, SCI and SA (Sustainability Appraisal), other documentation in the Local Development Framework comprise a Core Strategy, Development Policies and Allocations Development Plan Documents (DPDs), a Proposals Map and Supplementary Planning Documents.
  • Sustainability Appraisal (SA). The policies and proposals contained in the Local Development Framework must be appraised to make sure they contribute to the aims of Sustainable Development. The SA document sets out the results from this appraisal.

The current Development Plan for the area comprises the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) and adopted Local Development Framework documents and a saved Local Plan policy which will change over time. For more advice on the current Development Plan and when changes will take place, see What is the Development Plan Opens in a new window?

For the latest information regarding the progress of the Local Development Framework please see the LDF Update Opens in a new window. If you wish to purchase any of the documents please refer to the current document Price List Opens in a new window.
