The Springboard Business Centre
Hambleton is a prosperous and vibrant part of North Yorkshire that combines a stunning environment and an exceptional quality of life with excellent facilities for business and enterprise. In 2004 Hambleton District Council commenced the 2.4million managed workspace development - the Springboard Business Centre, which is located on Stokesley Business Park. The development offered a chance for the District Council to build a sustainable building whilst creating a state of the art business incubator that offers 20 individual office suites set around a central atrium with the benefit of meeting facilities, staffed reception, a resident Business Adviser and landscaped gardens.
The prime aspect of the building for which it can claim sustainability is its environmental engineering. As far as realistically able materials were sourced locally. The concrete blocks, timber and aluminium windows were all manufactured in Yorkshire. The aluminium solar screen material was produced in Hartlepool and panels were fabricated in Teesside. Other key sustainable features include:
- The block work structure of the building affords a good thermal mass, important for the environmental performance of the building.
- The louvers deal with low angle sun on the east and west elevations, solar screens wrap the building. At windows the screening forms movable vertical louvers which are operable by the users, these provide controllable views, act as a security screen and enable high level windows to be left open at night in summer for night cooling. Expanded aluminium is used for the solar screen, although aluminium has a high embodied energy content it does have the benefit of being recyclable.
- The building is environmentally engineered to minimise its energy demands. It utilises a building management system to control the natural ventilation of the building and a simple heating system which together serve to maintain comfortable conditions year around in the offices and atrium. Excellent natural day lighting minimises the reliance on artificial lighting.
- Rainwater is collected, stored in underground tanks and reused to flush toilets and provide water for irrigation.
- The Springboard has reed beds, which will provide some biodiversity to the site.
- The car park is laid with gravel to aid water drainage.
The Centre has collected a number of different awards for its design and sustainability - including the Journal Landmark Environmental Award, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Pro Yorkshire Award for Design & Innovation and the RIBA White Rose Award for Sustainability.
