Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)

Hambleton is one of the few District Councils (not an LEA) to produce its own Education for Sustainable Development Strategy(ESD).

Included in this document are - Actions to take Forward (Chapter5) - some 27 of them, for the community at large, as part of an inclusive all-age lifelong learning programme, some for immediate action, others more long term, to cover the period from 2003 to 2013.

It is not presumed that Hambleton is 'going solo on ESD' -more that it would promote all those in the ESD field, gathering, publicising, assisting, encouraging and promoting their efforts alongside its own.

Partner Providers with HDC

The list includes - regional website links; the Local Education Authority; Learning through Landscapes; Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group, Thirsk Community Woodland Group offering opportunities to get involved in tree planting schemes; the Swale and Ure Washlands Project offering a chance for hands-on experience of natural habitat conservation; and Northdale Horticulture giving working opportunites to those with learning difficulties as well as others.

Hambleton is also playing a lead role in Action for Climate Change by responding to the Regional Action Plan with its own Local Action Plan - available on this website soon. One of the Partner-Providers, Climate-Concern UK, gives people the chance to talk over their local anxieties and respond as a group - always easier than feeling you are a 'small fish in a big pond' when floods-gales-storms-drought-and other unexpected weather conditions are around!

The ESD is available here on the website - the documents are in PDF format and may take some time to download. Please download all files onto your system in the same directory and read 'ESDinstructions4use.pdf'. Alternatively you can request a hard copy [10] or CD Rom version [2] by contacting the Sustainable Development Team at HDC, Civic Centre, Stone Cross, Northallerton, DL6 2UU or call 01609 767 160.
