Climate Change Strategy
Climate change is seen as one of the greatest threats that we face today. Almost everything we do has some impact on our natural environment, including the release of greenhouse gases. The effects of greenhouse gases have already been seen through adverse weather patterns, loss of habitats and wildlife and melting ice caps around the world.
In 1997 141 countries signed up to the Kyoto Agreement that required a reduction in greenhouse gases by 2012 relative to 1990 levels. The UK target is - 12.5% reduction in emissions from the 1990 base-line figure by 2010. But at a National level the UK government has set its own target of: 20% reduction in emissions from the 1990 base-line figure by 2010.
In November 2006 Hambleton District Council signed up to the Nottingham Climate Change Declaration to show its commitment to tackling the issues of climate change and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions being released within the District.
As a further commitment to the mitigation of climate change the Council is producing its own Climate Change Strategy which will be included on the website when published.
