The contamination of land has been occurring for many years and can result from man-made activities and natural processes. However it is only recently - in line with government policy on sustainable development - that it has been recognised that these areas of land need to be brought back into use. They need 'cleaning up'.
Hambleton has been home to numerous industrial processes in the past including gas works, landfill sites and brick works, all of which have left their mark on the environment.
