School - teenage pregnancy
The government monitors levels of teenage pregnancy and conception rates through the Teenage Pregnancy Unit which is based in the Department for Education and Skills. The Unit also monitors what support and guidance is given to young people in respect of sexual health issues, education and multi-agency working.
In North Yorkshire the Out of School Education Service Opens in a new window works in partnership with the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy Group to ensure that all young women have continued access to educational opportunities both during their pregnancy and after the birth of their child.
School nurses provide a variety of services to young people, such as providing health and sex education within schools, carrying out developmental screening, undertaking health interviews and administering immunisation programmes.
They can offer advice and support for a whole range of issues including bereavement, divorce and separation, family arguments, stress and relaxation techniques, boyfriend/girlfriend troubles, mood swings/feelings, bullying, self harm, drinking alcohol, smoking, feeling too thin/fat, puberty - body changes. emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, chlamydia screening, advice on behaviour management, or anything at all that is troubling you.
