School - assessment and performance

The progress of pupils in maintained schools is assessed at the end of the Reception Year (Foundation Stage Profile), Year 4 (Key Stage 1), Year 6 (Key Stage 2), and Year 9 (Key Stage 3). In the Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 3, teacher assessment is used and in Key stages 2 pupils sit National Curriculum Tests (SATS) in addition to teacher assessment. Pupils normally take GCSE, Vocational GCSE or other equivalent qualifications at the end of Year 11. There are a wide variety of pathways which students follow post 16 which lead to a range of qualifications.
