About the Parish
Topcliffe lies about 4 miles to the south-east of the Market town of Thirsk, renowned as the 'Darrowby' in the books by James Herriot.
Topcliffe itself was once an important staging post, being on the crossing point of the River Swale, and used by the coaching routes between York and Newcastle.
Today it is much quieter, although still one of the bigger villages in North Yorkshire. Dominated by the Church of St Columba, Topcliffe is now a mixture of old and new houses.
