About the Parish

Brafferton dates from Saxon times, the name 'Broad-ford-town' being derived from the ford which once existed here across the River Swale. In the seventh century, Paulinus selected this spot as one of the places on the river where be baptised thousands of people into the Christian faith, and a church was established here soon after.

Today Brafferton appears at first sight to be simply the northern part of Helperby, but it is in fact a separate village. The boundary runs along the centre of two of the streets. Brafferton has the church, the school and an inn.

A large part of the parish is rural - farm land, woods, ponds and pleasant countryside. The main London to Edinburgh railway line crosses its far eastern extremity.
