The Hambleton Community Safety Partnership's Domestic Abuse Forum is made up of a number of local agencies and organisations who aim to raise awareness of domestic violence and its effects on families and children and improve services for those experiencing domestic abuse.

Domestic Abuse is a hidden crime, but accounts for at least one quarter of violent crime in Hambleton.

Domestic Abuse can happen to anyone, in all kinds of relationships, for any reason, including threats, harassment, physical attacks, financial control and emotional abuse.

It's not easy to accept that a loved one can behave so aggressively. No-one deserves to be assaulted, abused or humiliated. We all have the right to live without fear of violence and abuse.
Do not assume you are to blame, you are not. Never be afraid to ask for help, you are not alone.

Leaving Safely

  • Have some money saved in case you need to use a taxi or bus.
  • If you don't have a mobile, find somewhere you can quickly and safely use the phone should you need to.
  • Take important documents such as your marriage and birth certificates, passports, benefit and bank books, health records.
  • Have a small bag already packed with an extra set of keys for the house and car should you need to leave in an emergency. You may prefer leaving this with a trusted friend.
  • If you choose to leave, try to take your children with you.
  • Take essential medicines that you or your children may need.
  • Leave when it is safe to do so.

If you later discover that you have left something essential behind, you can always arrange for a police escort so that you can return for it.

Children and Domestic Abuse

Children are also affected by domestic abuse. The abuser will try to convince you that if you report any incidents, then your children will be taken away from you. This is not the case at all, Social Services and other agencies have a responsibility to make sure that all children are safe and well and they will provide you with support in protecting your children.

If you are a child and you wish to speak to someone, you can contact:

Projects

Domestic Abuse Beer mats Opens in a new window were produced & distributed to pubs across Hambleton in a campaign to keep the issue of Domestic Abuse in the limelight. Leaflets of the same design as the beer mats have been distributed to the Friarage A&E Department and Doctor's Surgeries throughout Hambleton to put on the inside of public conveniences in both male & female toilets so that the Helpline Numbers can be discreetly taken down.
