Marriage - registering a building of worship
A licence is needed by a minister, proprietor or trustee of a place of religious worship to become a location where marriages can take place.
For a place of religious worship to become authorised for marriage, an application should be made by the proprietor or trustee of the building for it to be registered for the solemnization of marriages, for which a fee is payable.
To apply for certification you should contact the Superintendent Registrar who will supply you with application forms and who can advise you further. Contact details for the Superintendent Registrar can be found below.
These forms must be signed by some person connected with the place of worship. The building must have been taken into use as a place of meeting for religious worship before the forms are signed and dated.
Please note that different rules usually apply to churches or chapels of the Church of England.
