Message in a bottle
| Since its launch in June 2003 over 5000 bottles have been distributed to various agencies and residents throughout Hambleton. Residents are encouraged to conceal emergency information inside a special container stored in the fridge for safe keeping. | |
![]() | "There is a great deal of concern amongst many people about what would happen if they fell victim to an unexpected emergency whilst on their own," said Hambleton Community Safety Partnership Manager, Chris Fields. "Who would tell the emergency services what medication they take, what they are allergic too and what time the children need collecting from school. "The message in a bottle scheme addresses these problems. It knows no boundaries when it comes to age - and it prevents unnecessary, and potentially life threatening, delays." A small clearly labelled waterproof plastic bottle is kept in the fridge containing a sheet of vital information - contact numbers for next of kin, doctors, drugs, long term conditions and allergies. |
| A label is then stuck to the outside of the fridge door as well as on the inside of the main access door to the house signalling its presence. "We choose the fridge because not only is it easy to find in most homes in the event of a fire it is the one item which is likely to survive the longest," added Chris. "We hope as many people as possible sign up to this scheme." During last summer the scheme went 'on tour'following the County Council's Mobile Library Van around the villages in an attempt to get the bottles into even more homes. Partnership Officers were on hand to offer advice on everything from crime prevention and traffic congestion to fire safety and Pension Credits. East Cowton Post Office and Village Shop has also become the first store in the district to take a supply of bottles. If you live in Northallerton supplies are available from doctor's surgeries through the town's Lionesses and in Easingwold through the Easingwold Lions. All other areas can ring 0845 1211 555.
