CCTV

Hambleton District is one of the safest places to live in England, and we are dedicated to keeping it that way. The Closed Circuit Television System (CCTV) provided by the District Council has been in operation for 10 years.
It covers the main shopping areas and car parks in Northallerton, Thirsk, Stokesley and Bedale along with the public areas in the campus of the Friarage Hospital.

The Service

CCTV is an important tool to the Police and Community Safety Team in tackling crime and anti-social behaviour within the district. It collects and provides evidential images of suspects involved in crime and anti-social behaviour. It also assists with traffic management and provides evidential packages for the Police for interview and court purposes.

We have a total of 44 cameras deployed throughout the District which provide good quality images that are relayed back to the CCTV Control room. These images are recorded and stored in a secure room with access being restricted to Police Officers and dedicated staff, who look at the images for the purpose of gathering evidence.

Our Operators

Our CCTV Operators are highly trained and hold the Security Industry Authority Licence (SIA). They understand the need for confidentiality and that any breach can lead to dismissal. They attend regular training refresher courses to keep them up to date with the latest technology and legislation.

Privacy, Human Rights and Data Protection

The CCTV System is use to prevent and detect crime in our area, it is not designed to spy on people going about their normal daily business. All recordings are kept for a maximum of 31 days then are wiped unless they are needed by the Police for evidence. Evidential tapes are stored in a secured room until they are required to go to court, or the Police inform us that they can be destroyed.

Access to the CCTV Control room and associated equipment is restricted to CCTV Operators, who have all gone through a vetting procedure prior to taking up employment with the council. Access to any recording held in the control room is also restricted to Operators and Police Officers for the purpose of criminal investigations. This is a very important part of the Data Protection and Human Rights Acts.
