-Charities

Charities are part of British life. They range from small groups meeting local needs with few resources to the well-known major charities with budgets of millions.

Whatever their size or purpose, an essential requirement of all charities is that they operate for the public benefit and independently of government or commercial interests.

The Charity Commission for England and Wales Opens in a new window is established by law as the regulator and registrar of charities in England and Wales. Their aim is to provide the best possible regulation of these charities in order to increase charities' efficiency and effectiveness and public confidence and trust in them. They are also responsible for maintaining the Register of Charities.

There are three 'levels' of support for voluntary and community organisations in Hambleton, as follows:

'Local Infrastructure Organisation' (LIO), which has a base in your local area

North Yorkshire Forum for Voluntary Organisations Opens in a new window (NYFVO) is a registered charity formed in 1986. The Forum exists to promote, develop and support new and existing forms of voluntary and community action; and to ensure that their views and interests are well represented.

The Forum provides a range of services and support to voluntary organisations, community groups and charities in York and North Yorkshire.

Rural Action Yorkshire Opens in a new window is an independent charity, working with local communities to improve the quality of life for all people living and working in rural Yorkshire. They can help with community projects, such as useful guides which support you through planning a project, advice on how to carry out a consultation with local people or where you can access funding.
