Housing benefit - new claims and further information.

Benefits are your right, not charity.

Hambleton District Council is responsible for administering benefits on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions. Council tax and housing benefits are designed to help people on lower incomes such as those who are who are living on pensions, paying for childcare, unemployed or on low wages pay their rent and/or council tax.

Housing benefit is a contribution towards housing costs for people who pay rent - which is why it is often called rent allowance or rent rebate. Council Tax benefit is available to people who are liable to pay council tax on their home.

Both benefits are means tested - income and savings will be taken into consideration. Individual circumstances - along with those of any person living in the same house - will be taken into account.
