How to Claim
Pick up an application form at any of our offices (listed below); call 0845 1211 555; or apply on line Application for Housing Benefit.
You cannot claim Housing Benefit if:
- You live in the same dwelling as your landlord and they are a close relative
- The tenancy is not on a commercial basis.
- If the council believes that your liability has been created to take advantage of the scheme

Generally, all applications are payable from the Monday following the date of receipt of the application by the local authority - so claim straightaway. If you delay you may lose benefit.
Backdated Benefit
You can ask us to backdate your claim. If you ask us to do this you need to tell us the date you want your Benefit paid from and the reason why you did not apply at that time. We will then consider if you have shown "good cause" to have your Benefit backdated.
