-Housing benefit - change of circumstances

This Council aims to provide an efficient service and the information given explains the basic facts about your benefit.

When we send you your benefit notification letters the information is based on your circumstances as we know at the time. If any of your circumstances change, it may affect the amount of benefit you receive.

Everyone has life changes so here's a list of the kind of changes you need to tell us about:

  • You or your partner start work
  • Someone moves in or someone moves out
  • Your pay or working hours change (or your partners pay or working hours change)
  • Your savings go up or down (if they are more than £6,000) or go over £16,000
  • You start to get child maintenance paid directly to you or the amount changes
  • You start or stop claiming another benefit or the amount you get changes
  • You move home, even if only for a short time

By law you must let us know of a change straight away. If you delay by more than one month we may not be able to pay the increased amount we owe you from the date the change happened.

By letting us know straight away we will be able to pay you the correct amount of benefit.
