-Council tax - annual notification

Council Tax is the tax all local council's charge to help pay for the services they provide. The tax is linked to the value of your home and there is only one bill for each household. The basic bill assumes that there are at least two adults living in each property - if there are less than two adults living in the home the bill may be reduced.

As there is only one bill for each property, the owner-occupier or tenant is usually responsible for paying the Council Tax bill. If no-one lives in the property, then the person who owns the property is liable.

In some cases more than one person will be responsible for paying the Council Tax - joint owners, joint tenants or a couple living together.

Here in Hambleton your bill will include charges from Hambleton District Council, North Yorkshire County Council, parish councils, the fire and police services. We arrange the billing and collection of council tax on behalf of all these authorities.

The Council operates systems for paying Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit (or Rent Allowance as it is sometimes called). If you are on a low income and paying rent or council tax or both, then you may be eligible to claim Housing or Council Tax Benefit or both
